Random example for presence of mind

Not sure whether this makes for presence of mind, just sharing..

In one of my earlier organisation many years back, one customer has included a penalty clause (deducting some percentage of payments) for delayed shipments of products to him. The product was a combination of some outsourced parts from different regions of the country. Hence we had lesser controls on few parts. However the contract was important strategically.  The delivery schedule of the products was planned in phases to customer’s sites.  A smart sales person agreed to the penalty clause knowing the risk involved. However he proposed the customer a bonus clause that involved some bonus (customer had to pay additional costs) should be paid to us by customer, in case of advance shipments of products with almost equal condition to that of penalty. Overall the shipments were mix of delayed schedules in the beginning and advanced schedules towards the end. Both customer and we were happy.
